Oberndorf ist ein Dorf in den Alpen von Österreich.
Oberndorf  is   a village in the Alps   of    Austria.

Es ist Winter im Jahre 1818 und der Tag vor  Weihnachten.
It    is  winter inthe year 1818  and the day before Christmas.

Eine kleine Maus wohnt in der Sankt Nikolaus Kirche.
A       little    mouse lives  in the Saint Nicholas Church.

Es ist sehr kalt  und die Maus hat  Hunger.
It   is very cold and the mouse has hunger.

Sie kann nichts zu essen finden.
She can nothing to  eat   find.

Endlich findet die Kirchenmaus einen Lederbalg hinter der Orgel.
Finally   finds   the church mouse  a  leatherbag  behind the organ.

Die Maus knabbert und knabbert. Das Leder schmeckt gut.
The mouse knaws   and knaws.   The leather   tastes   good.

Die Maus ist nicht mehr hungrig.
The mouse is not  more hungry. (no longer)

Der Organist Franz Gruber kommt in die Kirche die Orgel zu spielen.
The organist  Franz Gruber comes in the church the organ to  play.

Er muß gut spielen,

He must good play

weil die Mitternacht Messe zu Weihnachten heute nacht ist.
because the midnight mass to Christmas  todays night is.

Die Orgel tönt  nicht. Sie ist kaputt!  Er erzählt dem Pfarrer Josef Mohr.
The organ sounds not. She is broken! He tells  the priest   Josef Mohr.

Wie kann man die Messe zu Weihnachten ohne Musik zu haben?

How can  one  the  mass  at    Christmas   without music to have?

Unmöglich!

Impossible!

Was machen wir? Franz sagt ihm, daß er seine Gitarre spielen konnte.
What make we?    Franz tells  him, that he  his    guitar     play   could.

Er hat eine kleine Melodie, ein Weihnachtslied geschrieben.
He has a   little   melody       a   Christmas song   written.

Aber das Lied  hat keine Wörter und keinen Titel.
But    the  song has   no    words   and   no       title.

Der Pfarrer hat neulich eine Weihnachtsgedicht geschrieben.
The  priest  has recently    a       Christmas poem     written.

Vielleicht die Wörter gehen mit der Melodie zusammen.
Perhaps  the  words    go    with the  melody  together.

Sie versuchen es zu spielen und singen.
They    try            it   to   play     and sing.

"Nicht schlecht" sagt Vater Josef, "aber was für einen Titel soll es haben?"
"Not     bad "      says Father Joef, "but  what for     a    title should it have?

Franz hat eine Idee. Die Orgel ist kaputt.

Franz has  an idea. The organ is broken.

Ohne Musik zur Mitternacht ist alles  still.
Without music tothe midnight is all still.

"Wir nennen es Stille Nacht!"
"We  name   it   Silent Night!"
